Ukraine to speed up implementation of UN convention on rights of persons with disabilities

Ukraine will speed up work on the implementation of the provisions of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in the domestic legislation and introduce the European standards of life for people with disabilities, Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych said in a statement on the occasion of the International Day of Disabled Persons.

The head of state said that he would personally oversee the process of bringing the Ukrainian legislation on the protection of persons with disabilities in line with European standards. "I think that one of the national priorities for ensuring the social adaptation of persons with disabilities is their maximum involvement in a multi-vector life of the country," he said. Yanukovych noted that particular attention should be paid to people with disabilities every day, not once a year. "I as president have set the task of breaking the system of the state's indifference towards the disabled," he said. The head of state also noted the work of public organizations and the associations of disabled persons and thanked everyone who helps people with disabilities.
