Int’l day for disabled marked with calls for focusing on problems of handicapped - Pakistan

LAHORE: A person with disabilities is one who on account of an injury, a disease, or any congenital deformity is handicapped in undertaking any gainful profession or employment.

The third day of December every year is observed as the International Day of Persons With Disabilities the world over and calls for shifting our focus towards problems being faced by the handicapped community, which lives in seclusion from the mainstream society.

The world is moving towards progress in every walk of life, but when we look towards Pakistani society we all are bounded with loads of social problems, which are hard to resolve. Social issues are matters, which directly or indirectly affect many or all members of a society and are considered to be problems, controversies related to moral values, or both. Out of many social problems, neglecting the rights of special people is one.

No one wants to hear them or give them proper love and care. They are being rejected by most of the societies. Due to ill-behaviour of the people, they are facing lots of trouble in exploring their talent and creativity.

Today, there is much noise about the United Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), but it appears that we are never going to achieve these goals unless we educate the disabled children in our country. The work of federal and provincial governments in this regard also needs to be probed.

Similarly, facilities for educating disabled children lacks in our country, and if available, these have limited access to public, as a large number of Pakistani population lives in villages and small towns.

According to a survey, 10 to 20 disabled children are living in each village surrounding Lahore whose parents are unaware of importance of education for them.

The government has no time, money and sources to spend on education of these children while plans of most of the non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and civil society also ignore these children.

Ghazali Education Trust Director Syed Amir Mehmod told Daily Times that the government, opposition, media, civil society and NGOs always talked about corruption, politics, social and many others issues, but never spoke about the disabled persons.
