0.32 million disabled live in Pakistan: Sharmila

The annual observance of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities is aimed at promoting an understanding of disability and gains to be derived from the integration of such persons in every aspect of the political, social, economic and cultural life of their communities.

Advisor to Chief Minister Sindh Sharmila Farooqui expressed this while talking to members of civil society at her office here on Friday. She emphasised that the day provides an opportunity to mobilise support to achieve the goal of participation in society, established by the world programme of action concerning disabled persons, proclaimed by United Nations General Assembly in 1992.

She said that about 3,286,630 disabled people were living in Pakistan with different types of disabilities like blindness (8.06 percent), deaf (7.43 percent), crippled (19.83 percent), mentally retarded (7.6 percent) and others (57.98 percent). "Besides natural disability poverty and disability creates a vicious circle. Poor people are more at risk of acquiring a disability because of lack of access to good nutrition, a complete balance diet, health care, sanitation, education, as well as safe living and working conditions", she observed.
