Statement by New Democrat Leader Jack Layton on the International Day of Persons with Disabilities - Canada

Today is the International Day of Persons with disabilities and the perfect occasion to remind ourselves of the importance of taking serious measures to improve the lives of people who live with those disabilities.
It is estimated that over 4 million Canadians live with a disability. While much has been done about issues such as accessibility over the years, it is easy to forget that people with disabilities still face daily challenges and hurdles, and that all too often, disabilities are synonymous with poverty. It is therefore important to take immediate action, such as refundable tax credit and extension of EI Sickness Benefits, so that Canadians with disabilities can continue to live productive and fulfilling lives. We simply can’t accept that so many people have to live without proper access to the resources and support they need.
On behalf of New Democrats, I would like to urge all parties in the House of Commons to implement these measures so that Canadians living with disabilities can have full access to Canada’s diverse programs and enjoy the same way of life as people without disabilities do. I also take this occasion to reiterate the NDP’s commitment to inclusion and equality for all Canadians; we all have a right to the quality of life our great communities provide.
