International Day of Persons with Disabilities - USA

U.S Department of State issued a press statement December 2nd, to recognize December 3, as the International Day of Persons with Disabilities. This international observance has been promoted by the United Nations  since 1992. This years celebration is centered on a theme entitled 'Keeping the Promise." Past themes have included decent work for persons with disabilities, a voice of our own and independent living and sustainable livelihoods.
International Day of persons with Disabilities was established to create global and national awareness. Families across the world affected by a disability are the focus of the UN today. According to World Health Organizations an estimated 650 million people live with a disability. 475,000 children from age 3 to 5 years old, and 228,000 children age 3 or under were reported as having a disability by parents to the US census bureau in 2005.
National celebrations will take place today in several countries. Take time today to share your experiences with other families and recognize all the accomplishments that have been made. Embrace those affected with a disability and celebrate in their honor on International Day of Persons with Disabilities.
