Disabled persons: 'philanthropists, government should join hands for rehabilitation' - Pakistan

The International Day of Disabled Persons reminds us that every person deserves opportunities for productive employment in conditions of freedom, equity, security and human dignity. The Lahore Businessmen Association for Rehabilitation of the Disabled (LABARD) President Muhammad Pervez Malik said this in a statement issued on the occasion of International Day of Disabled Persons.

He said that the disabled persons have the ability to make valuable contributions in the workforce as employees, entrepreneurs and employers, but they face numerous barriers that prevent them from fulfilling their potential. Yet, whenever the opportunity arises, persons with disabilities prove their worth as productive members of the workforce.

He said that both the philanthropists and the government should join hands for the rehabilitation of disabled persons so that they could be able to play their role as active member of the society. The LABARD has been working for rehabilitation of disabled for over a decade, he said and added that the association had so far arranged jobs for hundreds of disabled persons and a state-of-the-art training centre of LABARD was also providing training to disables in various faculties and also arranging their placements in different organisations. The number of disabled persons who got them registered with the LABARD for availing these facilities is now in thousands, he maintained.

They said that rehabilitation of disabled persons was a sacred job and everybody should come forward to play his role. In the developed world, the disabled persons are always given a special treatment, they are provided with every possible facility so that they could use their abilities for the well-being of society and now the situation in Pakistan was also taking a positive turn and a large number of disabled persons are running their own businesses with the help of LABARD, Malik added.
