* Poverty alleviation fund has initiated various projects to bring special people into the mainstream

The Pakistan Poverty Alleviation Fund (PPAF) observed the International Day of Persons with Disabilities with an aim to create awareness among masses about the needs of people with disabilities.

Simple but impressive ceremonies were held in Karachi, Khairpur, Multan, Swabi, Swat and Rawalakot. Elected representatives, government officials, representatives of the civil society and organisations working for disabled persons participated in these ceremonies. Addressing a ceremony in Multan on Friday, PPAF Chief Operating Officer Kamran Akbar said that there was a need to bring persons with disabilities in the mainstream by including them in development process. He assured that the PPAF would undertake all efforts to make persons with disabilities an effective and efficient part of society. He said the PPAF’s commitment to the full and effective participation of all persons with disabilities was deeply rooted in the quest for social justice and equity in all aspects of societal development.

The PPAF has launched a nationwide Enterprise Development Training Programme for the special people to impart them trainings so that they could have a regular and an independent source of earning for themselves and their dependents, he said, adding that this was the first of its kind initiative launched by the PPAF for the benefit of the disabled persons in Pakistan. Launched under the PPAF’s Disability Project, the purpose of this nationwide programme is to impart useful skills trainings to more than 600 persons with disabilities annually, so that they could become independent breadwinners for their families, he said. Under Enterprise Development Training Programme, the PPAF will also help persons with disabilities to develop their own businesses under its business incubation segment and to finance them to establish businesses of their choice immediately after undergoing the training programme.

Through its network of partner organisations spreading across the country, the PPAF has also launched a phased carpet survey to identify persons with disabilities and their inclination towards certain businesses, he said. As a pilot project, the PPAF has imparted Enterprise Development Training to a batch of 42 people, including 14 disabled women, in Multan, he said.
