Digital Artist Sees Global Celebrations For International Day of Persons with Disabilities

Liverpool based DaDaFest International 2010 and VSA, The International Organisation on Arts and Disability, based in Washington, DC, will be celebrating International Day of Persons with Disabilities and the end of this year’s festival on a global scale; 17 countries including England (Liverpool and London) and Scotland will hold an international screening of artist Simon Mckeown’s Motion Disabled to raise awareness about disability rights.
Motion Disabled is a 3D digital animation video created by Simon Mckeown, which originally featured fourteen actors with varying disabilities. His work for International Day of Persons with Disabilities focuses on a new work with Claire Cunningham, an internationally acclaimed dancer with a disability, was recently featured on the BBC’s Culture Show in a programme featuring DaDaFest International 2010.
“There are 650 million people with disabilities ― ten percent of the world’s population. On December 3rd, we’re making a statement that everyone deserves inclusion and access to equal opportunities,” said Soula Antoniou, VSA president. “This installation by one of Britain’s most experienced 3D animators explores the uniqueness of each person’s physicality and challenges conventional ideas of motion and disability.”
Simon has incorporated the technology used to create characters such as Gollum from the Lord of the Rings trilogy within Motion Disabled. Simon worked with artists and performers who are Deaf and have disabilities to create a series of Avatars based around their movement; he did this by utilising a motion capture body suit with visual markers and cameras that record in 3D the movement of the body
